Did you know that your pet can suffer from allergies just as you do?
Your furry family members can suffer from environmental or food allergies just like humans. If your pet is scratching and itching excessively right now, this may be why!
Environmental allergies are caused by the things surrounding you and your pets such as mold, pollen, and grass. During the spring and fall seasons, your pet is more likely to react to these allergens. It’s always good to keep an eye out for signs like excessive itching, licking, and biting, as well as irritated ears and watery eyes. If you feel that your pet is struggling with their allergies, reach out to your veterinarian! There are many options to help relieve symptoms from cleansing shampoos to medications, depending on the severity.
Food allergens affect only 10% of pets and are caused by your pet’s immune system mistaking some proteins as a foreign invader rather than food. This causes the pet’s immune system to react negatively. The most common food ingredient allergens are animal proteins such as chicken, beef, eggs, and dairy. It’s important to recognize and acknowledge the reactions to food because they can be similar to environmental allergy symptoms. In addition to itching and licking, pets can sometimes get skin infections (hot spots), bloating, vomiting or diarrhea. If you see any of these symptoms, its best to contact your veterinarian to figure out the best dietary option for your pet.
